why i stopped being an athiest

<GDawg> but we still cling to our views and arguments as they are basically synonymous with ego
<Universal> my most recent one was a very interesting topic,
<Universal> it was about the transmission of the Bible and The Quran
<Universal> and which one, was the most reliable one,
* Yaqoob (Yaqoob@4E2FA9.A3E1BC.B4FEAB.A84668) has joined #christianity
<GDawg> well you have to realise that the quran is about 500 years older than writings of teh BIble
<obli> i think the "new athiest" movement kind of chipped away at my atheism a bit... because i saw dawkins and pullman speaking more and more like religionists... just talking irrational bullshit about the marvels of the universe and that... and the ammount of hero worship and appeals to authority amongst the "new atheists". atheism doesn't need appeals to authority.. it rests on reason
* tobi sets mode: +l 50
<GDawg> therefore contains information unknown to it
<GDawg> plus atheism has the same fundementalist ignorance that allr eligion has
<Universal> GDawg, sure, i totally understand that,
<obli> not to overstate the impact of the "new atheism" in how things turned out... most of it was entirely independant of that
<zane> hello crazies.
<zane> :P
<obli> but it played a small role
<Universal> but the thing is that Judaism, Christianity and Islam share a lot of similarities
<GDawg> also Christianity used the original writings give or take of the ISrealites
<Universal> and all of those 3 have their own criteria for heaven and hell for example,
<Argo> imo it is unscientific to dismiss something you have no experience of
<GDawg> where as Islamic scholars after Muhammed and even Aisha died
<GDawg> created an entirely new narrative
<GDawg> that was written by fresh eyes at least 1000 years after the fact
<obli> yeah i think that was the thin edge of the wedge Argo... i could accept the idea there was such a thing as a "religious experiance"
<GDawg> the oldest OT books we have are those of Elijah
<obli> and it all sort of flowed from there
<GDawg> Genesis etc came later
<Universal> GDawg, its interesting to see
<Universal> how Jews accept the OT, but not the OT
<GDawg> but Islam we wrote it all
<GDawg> jesus died before the NT
<Universal> christians accept both, but practise the NT
<GDawg> so his acceptance is non existant
<obli> but its a long way from a religious experiance and proving the god of the bible :P
