lovecraft and pantheon
"Anyway, I think I have had a breakthrough in understanding Lovecraftian entities. Most modern systems are Derlethian and present the Elder Gods/Great Old Ones as a pantheon. But based on the original textI don't think they're a pantheon at all, I think most of them are figureheads of entirely distinct religions, not exactly monotheistic Gods, but also not polytheistic gods in the traditional sense. They interact with one another because they all exist in the same universe, and sorcerors will often invoke several of them at once, but as far as actual worshippers go most congregations tended to focus on a single God."
i'd argue that polytheism at it's most potent was a lot like that.... it's just that soon after written records appear attempts are made to draw together huge unwieldy pantheons, becuase writing allows drawnout tenious connections to be drawn between the gods(edited)
a lot like that isn't 'exactly' like that, but i don't think the gods are all the same type of being, and the connections you draw between them changes your understanding of their existance.... and if you are drawing connections between like, 3 of them, it gives a very diffrent understanding than trying to harmonise 30 at once
