Indoctrination in the school environment.

In a school assembly we were made to sing the national anthem multiple times as we were not singing is with enough "passion". At some point the assistant principal asked in exasperation to "raise your hand if you think the national anthem is lame".
I was the only one who raised my hand.
This had followed another time when we (the whole school) were threatened with not being allowed to preform the school haka at the rugby match if we didn't take haka practice seriously... somehow this worked. This was when I realised the imagination, let alone the desire, let alone the will, to resist didn't exist amongst my peers, which was a big impetuous behind me raising my hand when the opportunity presented itself.
