movement and primitivism

[20:27] <Eugenius> If art is so essential to our existence, than it should not need to be held to such lofty standards. If anything, we should be able to encourage ALL people to be creative. We have better art when everyone can feel comfortable and able to do so - not just cosmopolitans and hipsters
[20:30] <obli> maybe. I'd rather encourage art with some ambition. there's scant encouragement for romantic art nowadays.
[20:30] <Eugenius> Ambition comes from the self
[20:30] <Eugenius> not from movements
[20:31] <Eugenius> Weak willed and uninspired people bandwagon with movements far more than taking risks on their own dreams and aspirations
[20:31] <Eugenius> Community is great - even being apart of something bigger than oneself, but it always comes back to YOU
[20:31] <obli> romantic aspiration comes from the self as well
[20:31] <obli> the outsider artist is the romantic artist
[20:33] <obli> you ever heard of the class of art known as the "visionary environment" ?
[20:34] <Eugenius> Not really
[20:34] <obli> their like weird buildings/compounds made by outsider artists
[20:34] <obli> not as part of a movement
[20:34] <obli> just by their own impulse/madness
[20:35] <obli> this is probably the most famous one
[20:35] <obli> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferdinand_Cheval
[20:39] <obli> i don't think (generally) art movements are as cynical as you make them out to be... they arise from a Zeitgeist or common human impulse
[20:42] <Eugenius> I don't necessarily think they are cynical. I more think that they are rationalizations or romanticizations of factors of artistic inspiration that are often far less confined to a new philosophy of art, and are instead organical outgrowths of the inspiration of artists or a community or a culture - and not really as new as they are often claimed to be
[20:42] <Eugenius> organic*
[20:43] <Eugenius> That is to say, Cubism was inspired largely by Picasso, but I'm far less interested in Cubism and far more interested in the life and experience of Picasso, or perhaps other cubists - as I would be any other artist
[20:43] <Eugenius> We all have our favorites though, of course
[20:43] <Eugenius> When I was in college, I took a sculpture class, and my work was inspired by German Expressionism
[20:44] <obli> well how a movement is conceptualised is at least as much if not more on critics and curators
[20:44] <Eugenius> I liked the juxtaposition of modern and ancient in the medium
[20:44] <Eugenius> Something that felt a bit classical and a bit of antiquity all at the same time
[20:45] <Eugenius> Music is more my deal
[20:45] <Eugenius> And speaking about music, I do like genres
[20:45] <Eugenius> I study genres
[20:45] <obli> well a lot of modernism draws heavily from "primitivism" doesn't it
[20:46] <obli> which was one of the drivers behind the proliferation of 'movements' in the early 20th century, art as idol, movement as cult, all straining toward and ideal
[20:47] <obli> an ideal
