kind of feel like this reluctance to engage with magic represents a kind of academic ambivalence
not a reluctance to engage with the subject matter

the desire to condemn that characterised academic engagement in the past is dead
but they can't envision a model under which they embrace it
so they seek to marginalise the category through strategies of abandonment
