metamodernism and the avant garde

  • james is metamodernisim in the same avenue, or a different one to contemporary art would you say? i mean both occur at the same time yes, but they have different agendas?
  • James Collins
    James Collins
there are contemporary artists doing it... but its still very new
  • Alice Maclaurin
    Alice Maclaurin
so what is it exactly I am trying to understnad
  • James Collins
    James Collins
ie. the ybas are definatly not metamodernism
the position of sincerity in contemporary art i guess
  • Alice Maclaurin
    Alice Maclaurin
so that article you just sent me was talking about metamodern women ect, so is it more of a classification of the times we live in across arts and culture or is metamodernisim something that can just be applied to art? I'm a bit confused
  • James Collins
    James Collins
its more about the position of the new avant garde i guess
  • James Collins
    James Collins
people who want change not possible within the post-modern paradigm... but it can't be modernism becuase modernist positions are untenable in the post modern era
or at least... uncritically holding modernist positions
    • James Collins
      James Collins
      Metamodernist // Manifesto
      www.metamodernism.org
We recognise oscillation to be the natural order of the world. We propose a pragmatic romanticism unhindered by ideological anchorage. We must go forth and oscillate!
    • Alice Maclaurin
      Alice Maclaurin
you and your manifestos, talking of which, that manifesto you made in first year, do you still stick by it?
    • James Collins
      James Collins
      what one
      manifest often and stridently
    • Alice Maclaurin
      Alice Maclaurin
you said you made one and showed it to the tutors and they didn't like it
    • James Collins
      James Collins
      to a point
i have better ways to achive its aims than are stated in it though
      more subtle and effective
      • so i guess... yes
      • Alice Maclaurin
        Alice Maclaurin
urgh im gunna have to read your metamodern manifesto later with a dictionary
      • James Collins
        James Collins
in point 2 when they say its antonymous bastard child. they mean post modernism
basicly what they are saying in the metamodernist position is an osculation between modernism and post modernism
      • Alice Maclaurin
        Alice Maclaurin
why didn't they just write that then!
      • James Collins
        James Collins
        they did
      • Alice Maclaurin
        Alice Maclaurin
oh no they didn't they wrote academic gibberish!
      • James Collins
        James Collins
        pseudo academic gibberish
i don't think artists have a responisbility to be clear communicators
they can talk how they like
i am not sympathetic with them becuase they are good at retoric... just becuase they are right
